Place lime wedges in the bottom of an old fashioned glass, cut-side up.
Sprinkle the sugar over the limes.

The Caipirinha has its roots deep in Brazilian culture, with origins tracing back to the early 20th century. It’s believed that the drink started as a home remedy for the Spanish flu, originally mixed with garlic and honey. Over time, these ingredients were dropped, and what remained was a simple concoction of lime, sugar, and cachaça—the country’s beloved sugarcane spirit. Today, the Caipirinha is enjoyed in bars from Rio to New York, symbolizing Brazilian joie de vivre.
A fresh lime wheel or wedge perched on the rim adds a pop of color and signals the citrusy punch of the drink.
