The Tuxedo emerged in the late 19th century, most notably appearing in Harry Johnson’s Bartender’s Manual (1900). Named after the exclusive Tuxedo Park Club in New York, this drink was designed to embody the refinement of the upper class. It’s a close cousin to the Martini but made unique with the addition of dry sherry and absinthe. Over the years, bartenders have tailored the Tuxedo to fit evolving palates, but its dignified character remains unchanged.
A lemon twist—expressed over the drink and dropped in—adds a fresh citrus aroma that lifts the botanicals in the gin and brightens the flavors.
