The Whiskey Smash dates back to at least the mid-19th century, first appearing in print in Jerry Thomasâs legendary 1862 'Bartenderâs Guide.' Itâs a close cousin to the Mint Julep and the classic Sour, but the Smash distinguishes itself with its use of muddled lemon and mintâliterally âsmashingâ the ingredients together. This approach made it a favorite during the golden age of cocktails and a mainstay in American bars ever since.
A fresh mint sprig, lightly slapped to release its aroma, and optionally a lemon wheel. The mintâs aroma enhances each sip and complements the drinkâs herbal notes.
Roughly 170-190 calories per serving, mostly from alcohol and simple syrup. Contains vitamin C from lemon. Sugar content: about 7g per cocktail.
