The Black Russian first appeared in the late 1940s at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, Belgium. Gustave Tops, a Belgian bartender, created it for Perle Mesta, the American ambassador to Luxembourg, and a renowned socialite. The drink’s name reflects its ingredients: vodka (a quintessentially Russian spirit) and coffee liqueur, which gives it its dark coloring. Over time, its simplicity and sophistication have made it a staple in bars worldwide, spawning many delicious variations.
No garnish is traditional, but a single coffee bean or a twist of orange peel adds a nice aromatic touch and visual flair.
